ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia on Wednesday repatriated over 1100 citizens from Saudi Arabia, bringing the total number of people repatriated from the Gulf Nation to over 5,000.
Authorities started airlifting Ethiopian nationals living in difficult conditions in Saudi Arabia on March 30, 2022.
Three flights with a total of 1, 103 on board have arrived at Addis Ababa bole international airport on Wednesday, said the spokesperson office of the foreign ministry.
About 929 of them are men unlike the previous returnees who were dominantly women and Children.
The returnees were welcomed by Foreign Affairs officials upon their arrival at the Airport.
To date, the nation has repatriated more than 5, 100 its nationals who were living in difficult conditions in Saudi Arabia.
Most of the returnees have joined their families, said the spokesperson office.
Authorities plan to bring at least 100, 000 Ethiopians back to their home country in the coming seven months.
The Ministry said the government will continue repatriating Ethiopians in various prisons and detention centers in Saudi Arabia by conducting three flights a day for three days every week.
An estimated 750,000 Ethiopians currently reside in Saudi Arabia. At least 450,000 are likely to have traveled to the country through irregular means and may need help to return home.
