ADDIS ABABA – The Ethiopian football team secured a 5-0 win over South Sudan on Thursday, advancing to the final round of the 2023 African Nations Championship qualifiers.
The two teams went to today’s match with an equal advantage following their goalless draw in the first leg played in a neutral venue – Benjamin Mkapa Stadium of Tanzania – a week ago. The second-leg encounter was also played at the same venue.
It was Wubetu Abate’s side that look threatening from the get-go. Two consecutive goals helped Walia Ibex to finish the first half with a two-goal lead.
Ramadan Yesuf scored the first goal on 33 minutes and, a minute later, Amanuel Gebremichael added the second for Ethiopia.
Ethiopian players came out for the second half with a positive attitude.
Twenty-one minutes into the second half, a South Sudanese player scored an own goal taking Ethiopia’s lead to 3-0.
Mesud Mohamed and Yegezu Bogale also scored the remaining two goals that secured their team’s progress to the second-round CHAN qualifiers with a 5-0 aggregate win over South Sudan.
Ethiopia will next battle Rwanda for a place at the 2023 CHAN in another double-legged round billed to hold in August/September.
Algeria will host the CHAN competition, featuring players only from the respective national championships, from January 8-31, 2023. Apart from the host nation, title-holders Morocco and Libya have secured places with the other 15 finalists to be known by September 4.
