ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopian Customs Commission said its officers seized 4.18 kilograms of contraband aquamarine gemstone in the Eastern city of Dire Dawa.
The Dire Dawa Customs branch recovered the contraband gemstone in the Sost Kilo area of the city on Thursday.
The seizure was made while the smugglers were preparing to ship the gem out of the country, the customs officials said today.
The four suspects have been arrested and are under investigation.
Ethiopian Customs Commission appreciated the Dire Dawa Customs branch and federal police officers for their joint effort to intercept the contraband Aquamarine.
Named after the color of seawater, aquamarine is one of several gemstones and mineral resources mined in Ethiopia. The nation. however. earns less than its expectation from the sector partly due to illegal trade.
