A rule prohibiting the promotion of alcohol in Ethiopia on social media will soon be made public

It should be remembered that the House of People’s Representatives of the Federal Republic of Indonesia approved the decree restricting smoking areas and outlawing the promotion of alcohol through broadcasting many years ago. When the decree was issued in 2019, the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority claimed that it was done so because there was a lot of alcohol advertising on the broadcast.

However, social media is currently being used to advertise alcohol in addition to broadcasting. According to Fresalam Yosef, head of the authority’s legal department, who spoke to Besarat Radio, the organizations where the ban has been put into effect are currently promoting using social media. Therefore, he stated that the implementation of the decree is in progress and will be completed shortly.

He claimed that the three-year delay in issuing the regulation for the decree’s implementation had caused us to become aware of problems that had not been apparent at the time the decree was issued, one of which is social media. There are points to include in terms of punishment, so we will see how things work out in the future. As a result, it is included in the regulation that is currently being prepared that it is prohibited to promote alcohol through social media in addition to broadcasting.
