Three persons were shot in the head and chest in Wolkite city, according to the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC).
Following the suspension of piped water supply in various locations in Wolkite city of Gurage zone in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples region for more than a month, the commission announced today that residents were killed and injured as a result of police violence against residents who protested for the government to solve their water problems.
In addition to the deaths caused by the security forces’ activities, it stated that at least 30 people were injured in varying degrees, based on information and data it acquired through interacting with eyewitnesses, victims, victims’ relatives, and health specialists.
According to the commission, the cause of the damage was the violent response of regional police when some demonstrators threw stones at the city’s water service office and blocked the road.
According to Dr. Daniel Bekele, Chief Commissioner of the Comission , the aggressive action adopted was disproportionate given the circumstances. He stated that it is completely unacceptable that people protesting for urgent water supplies were slain by employing lethal weapons and shooting at those throwing stones and blocking the road.
As a result, the chief commissioner stated, “The state government should conduct a quick inquiry to ensure that the culprits are held accountable and that the affected individuals receive adequate compensation.” He asked the security forces to be given clear leadership in order to prevent similar violations in the future.
The management of Wolkite city, on the other hand, has expressed deep sympathy for the loss of life in the city since yesterday.
