The 2023 edition of Africa Day is set to be marked at COP 28 in Dubai with a focus on financing climate action and green growth.
The event on Dec 2 will bring together high-level officials from the African Union and member states, the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), the African Development Bank (AfDB) and other regional partners.
The celebration at Africa Pavilion, Blue Zone in Dubai will be held under the theme “Scaling up Financing for Climate Action and Green Growth in Africa”.
It aims to amplify Africa’s voice at the UNFCCC COPs and to provide the space and platform to highlight Africa’s challenges, opportunities and responses to Climate Change, the organizers say.
Several high-level speakers including AU Commission Chair, Kenya’s president William Ruto, Comoros’s President and current AU chair Azali Assoumani will address the event.
The theme of this year’s Africa Day builds on insights and outcomes from the Africa Climate Summit (ACS) that was convened by the AU and hosted by President Ruto in Sept under the theme” Driving Green Growth and Climate Finance Solutions for Africa and the World”.
In this regard Africa Day at COP28 will provide a platform for Africa to pitch a strong case for leveraging investment capital from supporting business and ecosystems to leapfrogging to climate-compatible growth for sustainable development, says ECA.
