ADDIS ABABA – Drivers in Addis Ababa can now pay traffic fines using Ethio Telecom’s TeleBirr mobile money service, says traffic management agency of the city.
The Addis ABABA City Traffic Management Agency made the announcement on Thursday after launching the online payment service in collaboration with Ethio Telecom, owner of the mobile money platform.
The new service gives additional options for drivers to pay their outstanding fines and other offenses, the agency says.
Last year, its officials launched first online payment service for traffic fines that is integrated with E-Birr, a mobile financial service provider.
The newly launched service will allow drivers to pay penalty finance either using a fine ticket number via a 6050 short message or the Tele Birr Application.
The agency said the system can instantly confirm the payment to the traffic officer who issued the ticket via text, on the spot, without the need to give a driving license or remove the vehicle plate number.
Ethio Telecom’s Telebirr mobile money service has been gaining popularity since its launch in May 2021. The number of its users has reached 13.1 million, with a total transaction reaching 5.1 Billion birr in the first half of the current fiscal year.
