Ashara Media May 25, 2023 (Ginbot 17, 2015 EC) Journalist Genet Asmamaw – “The justice system is trying to silence me” In court Genet reportedly said, “…in addition to the assault I faced due to my identity I raised the issue of gender-based violence that was perpetrated against me to the court but my grievance was dismissed”. After Genet was abducted for her Amhara identity, the cruel soldiers of Abiy Ahmed committed sexual harassment against her which she tried to explain when she appeared in court, but the presiding judge appeared to gloss over the matter. Genet expressed her frustration against the press, “I am in dismay over the lack of independent media presence in this court hearing to expose what was done to me.” She said that the arguments and appeals in the court have not been widely reported and so the government has been able to shape the court proceedings in accordance with its own propaganda which doesn’t including arguments from both sides of the hearing and censors the voice of the detainees. She called on free and independent medias as well as journalists to be present in the courtroom to ensure truthful information was being provided to the public. She said it is shocking that there are no independent journalists or human rights defenders present in the court.
