Today, May 12, 2023 (Ginbot 4, 2015 EC), at 10 am journalists Dawit Begashaw and Tewodrose Asfaw appeared in the Federal Higher Court Lideta Branch First Instances Criminal Court. The journalists were previously released on bail by decision of the Arada courthouse on charges of inciting violence and unrest however federal police introduced new charges of terrorism, bringing them to the Lideta branch. In today’s court proceedings, their legal defense argued that the journalists were innocent and that they were extrajudicially detained. The defense also argued for them to be released on bail and to be allowed to follow their case outside. Despite this, the courthouse granted an additional 14 days of investigation time as confirmed by journalist Aragaw Sisay.
