AU Calls for Probe into Deadly Attacks on Civilians in Western Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA – The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, on Tuesday called for an investigation into the recent deadly attacks on civilians in western Oromia region of Ethiopia.

In a statement issued today, the chairperson said that he has learnt with concern the reports of attacks in the Wellega zone of the Oromia region resulting in the deaths of hundreds of civilians. 



“The Chairperson deeply regrets the loss of life and calls for an investigation into these attacks,” says the statement. 

He also urges the Federal Government and Regional authorities “to undertake the necessary actions to protect all civilians, including minorities, and ensure that such incidents are prevented.” 

The Chairperson expresses his condolences to the bereaved families, addng that he stands in solidarity with the people of Ethiopia and those promoting peaceful co-existence, unity, peace, and reconciliation.
