The African Union Chair has expressed condolences over a deadly road accident in Western Kenya that killed more than 50 people.
The accident occurred on Friday evening after a driver of a truck carrying a shipping container lost control of the vehicle. Reports say the truck then rammed over six cars and ran over pedestrians.
Police on Saturday put the death toll from the accident at 52. At least 32 people were also injured.
“My prayers and thoughts go to the families affected by the Londiani road tragedy, with wishes for a full recovery to the injured,” AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat said in a tweet.
“I wish to reiterate our full solidarity with President Williams Ruto, the people and government of Kenya during this difficult time,” he added.
The accident is one of the most deadly on Kenya’s roads in recent years. Last year, 34 people died in central Kenya when their bus veered off a bridge and plunged into a river valley.
