ADDIS ABABA – Top officials of the African Union expressed their extreme concerns over the “dangerous situation” in Ukraine.

Chair of the AU and President of Senegal, Macky Sall, and Chairperson of the AU Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, reacted over the latest developments in Easter Europe in a joint statement on Thursday Afternoon.

Earlier today, Russia began a large-scale military attack on Ukraine, its southern neighbor, on the orders of its President, Vladimir Putin.

There are reports of attacks on Ukrainian military infrastructure across the country, and Russian convoys entering from all directions.

The two AU officials said they are extremely concerned at the “very serious and dangerous situation created in Ukraine”.

They called on Russia and any other regional or international actor “to imperatively respect international law, the territorial integrity and national sovereignty of Ukraine.”

Sall and Mahamat “urge the two Parties to establish an immediate ceasefire and to open political negotiations without delay , under the auspices of the United Nations.”

This will help “to preserve the world from the consequences of planetary conflict, and in the interests of peace and stability in international relations in service of all the peoples of the world,” the statement reads.
