AU Provides Electoral Support to Gambia ahead of Presidential Poll

ADDIS ABABA – The African Union Commission on Monday said it has embarked on electoral support to the Gambia in a bid to promote peaceful, democratic and credible processes.

The West African nation is currently preparing to hold a presidential election, slated forDecember 4, 2021.

AU’s support – provided through its Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security – comprises election observation as well as technical assistance.

The Commission has commenced the deployment of AU Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) both on the basis of long and short terms.

Nine long term observers were deployed from 20 October 2021 and will remain in the country until 12 December 2021, it said.

The long term observers will be joined by the 50 short term observers from 23 November to 10 December 2021.

“This will enable the AUEOM to engage in a more comprehensive assessment of the electoral process,” the pan african body said.

The electoral assistance to the Gambia’s Independent Electoral Commission is in response to the request made by the latter to the African Union Commission.

The assistance includes support in electoral logistics operations, training of polling staff as well as purchase of COVID-19 protection materials for polling stations throughout the West African nation.

The December 4 presidential election marks a critical juncture towards democratic consolidation under the new political dispensation in the Gambia.

The Poll is the first presidential election since political change occurred following the 2016 election cycle.
