Authorities to Award 500 Loyal Taxpayers

ADDIS ABABA – Winners of this year’s top federal taxpayers award will increase to 500, Ethiopian tax authorities announced today, ahead of the annual recognition event.

The fifth edition of the award on Wednesday will honor loyal tax-paying businesses and companies of the 2022/23 Ethiopian fiscal year.

The Ministry of Revenues (MoR) collected 442 Billion Birr in tax and tariff revenues in the June-ended fiscal year, achieving 98.2% of its annual target.

The contribution of businesses under the federal large taxpayers category was 176.16 Billion Birr, meeting only 96% of the plan.

The MoR says the recognition aims to encourage winning businesses to continue paying their tax on time and others, off track from the legal lane, to revert course.

Major enterprises, private companies, importers, and exporters will be recognized under three award categories.

The number of recipients, this year, has increased to 500 from 400 last year.

Per MoR, 50 taxpayers will get platinum awards, up by 10 from last year. The gold and silver winners will increase by 30 and 60 businesses to 150 and 300, respectively.

The Ministry of Revenues also plans to recognize fourteen others with special awards at the event.

This annual recognition event is part of efforts to cultivate the culture of voluntarily declaring and paying taxes, says Revenues Minister Aynalem Nigussie.

Currently, there are 742 businesses and companies that fall under the large Taxpayers category.

They are expected to contribute 226.1 Billion Birr to the MoR’s tax mobilization plan this year, which targets 529 billion birr in tax and tax-related revenues.
