ADDIS ABABA – Two government offices have entered into a collaboration agreement to incorporate human rights education into Ethiopia’s school curriculum.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Ministry of Education and the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, EHRC, on Friday.
The agreement paves a way for the two parties to collaborate toward the inclusion and promotion of human rights issues in both formal and informal education.
This is in line with a target set in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) about “education for sustainable development and global citizenship”, Chief Commissioner Daniel Bekele said.
The MoU will allow the issues of human rights to become an integral part of the ethics subject currently given in secondary and higher education institutions, apart from mainstreaming the human rights values in related subjects.
‘A major Milestone’
The ministry of education and EHRC will also collaborate in ensuring the curriculum and books being used in teachers’ training colleges incorporate the concept and principles of human rights.
Deputy chief Commissioner Rakeb Mesele who attended the signing ceremony called the agreement “a major milestone”.
“Mainstreaming human rights education in formal & informal education is key to instilling human rights values in our society,” she said.
The MoU will also allow the Ministry of Education to join hands with the Commission in organizing the annual students’ Moot court competition.
The national competition among secondary school students was previously organized by the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission.
