Burundi beat Ethiopia to Progress to Next Round of WAFCON Qualifiers

ADDIS ABABA – Burundi beat Ethiopia on penalties to progress to the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) second-round qualifiers.

The two teams played the second leg of the Women’s Afcon qualifiers at Abebe Bikila Stadium after a 1-1 draw last Friday.



Rediet Asresahegn – who scored Ethiopia’s only goal in the first leg – put the Lucy’s ahead in the 19th minute.

Three minutes into the second half, Sandrine Niyonkuru scored an equalizer for Burundi. The match ended 2-2 on aggregate.

Burundi won 5-3 in a penalty shootout and will play the winner of the match between Uganda and Algeria in the second round.

The 11 winning teams will qualify for the WAFCON Morocco 2022.
