ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia’s St George were among the winners as the 2022/23 season of the CAF Champions League started over the weekend with the first leg matches of the preliminary round.
The reigning champions of the Ethiopian Premier League managed a 2-1 win over Sudanese outfit, Al Hilal, securing a slim result heading into the return tie.
Midfielder Chernet Gugsa scored both goals for his club in the first half of the march held at Bahir Dar National Stadium.
John Kamas scored Al Hilal’s only goal of the match in the second half.
The return match is scheduled to be played next weekend, with the aggregate winner sailing to the second preliminary round.
The winner will face the winner of Tanzania’s Young Africans between Zalan FC of South Sudan in the second round.
Young Africans made the most of their home away from home feeling, when playing South Zalan in Dar es Salaam, beating Sudan’s outfit with biggest margin in the first leg matches this weekend.
Fiston Mayele scored a hattrick and Feisal Salum added another as they won 4-0 ahead of next weekend’s return tie.
