ADDIS ABABA – The Ethiopian national team will face host nation Algeria in their group A during the 2022 African Nations Championship (CHAN) next year.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) held the draw in the host nation’s capital Algiers on Saturday evening.
Ethiopia will lock horns with Algeria, the 2014 CHAN winners Libya, and Mozambique.
The Walia Ibex, who ousted South Sudan in the previous round, qualified for the tournament after a 0-1 aggregate win over Rwanda last month.
The Group A matches will be played in Algeria’s capital Algiers.
In Group B, the two-time champions Congo DR, will play with Uganda, Cote d’Ivoire and Senegal in Annaba.
The defending champions Morocco, paired with Sudan, Madagascar and Ghana in Group C and will play in Constantine.
The remaining two Groups, D and E, with three teams each feature Mali, Angola and Mauritania on one side and Cameroon, Congo and Niger on the other.
Eighteen teams will take part in the CHAN for the first time in the tournament following CAF’s decision to increase the number of participating nations.
From eight participants during the first edition in 2009, it moved directly to 16 at the second edition in Sudan in 2011 and now to 18.
The upcoming Championship will take place from 13 January to 4 February 2023 in Algeria.
