ADDIS ABABA – The Ethiopian national team will get $200, 000 US Dollars rewards after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) made a significant increase in prize money for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) Algeria 2022.
The ongoing tournament in Algeria is now at the semi-final stage and the last two teams will play the final match on February 4, 2023, at Nelson Mandela Stadium.
Today, CAF says it will make a significant 60% increase in the prize money for the winner of the ongoing CHAN – a biennial continental tournament organized for players that feature in their domestic leagues in Africa.
The latest decision is in line with CAF’s strategy to increase the commercial value of African competitions.
The previous champion of the tournament received $1.25 million USD as prize money. This year, the winner of the trophy will receive $ 2 million, CAF President Patrice Motsepe confirmed on Friday.
Prize Money Boost for all
The runners-up will get US$800,000 while the third and fourth-placed teams will receive $500,000 each.
The total prize money allocated for the tournament has also been increased to $7.9 million from $5.45 million which was paid to all the countries that participated in the previous edition of the tournament.
The four sides that fail to progress beyond the quarter-finalists will get $400,000 each while the two countries that finish second in the groups of three teams will earn $300,000 each, the same amount as countries that finish third in groups of four teams.
Ethiopia will also have a significant share despite crashing out of the tournament at the group stage without a win.
The bottom-placed teams in all the groups will earn $200,000 each, according to the African football governing body.
