ADDIS ABABA – China’s State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi begins a two-day official visit to Eritrea today.
FM Yi and his delegation were received by his Eritrean counterpart, Osman Saleh, upon his arrival at Asmara International Airport on Tuesday evening.
Meeting is scheduled with President Isaias Afeworki, said Birhane Gebremeskel, Eritrea’s Information Minister in a brief statement posted on twitter.
Recently, Eritrea joined the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), President Xi Jinping’s trade and infrastructure development plan.
Asmara’s cooperation is expected to cement China’s foothold in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea, where Beijing has vast interests, ranging from a military base to mega infrastructure projects such as ports and railways, according to reports.
Under BRI, China has funded the construction of highways, railways and power plants across Africa.
