Commission Steps up Aid Delivery to Northern Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA – The National Disaster and Risk Management Commission (NDRC) says it has begun delivering a second round of emergency food aid delivery to conflict-hit communities in northern Ethiopia.

Humanitarian aid supplies began arriving in the north following the signing of a cessation of hostilities agreement between the federal government and TPLF in Pretoria on Nov 2, 2022.

Under the peace deal, the government pledged to work with humanitarian agencies to expedite the provision of aid.

In a press briefing Friday, Commissioner Shiferaw Teklemariam said the government along with partner organizations has been working to ensure unfettered access to conflict-hit areas both via roads and flight as per the agreement.

He said aid supplies are being delivered to the Tigray region through Shire and Mekelle air routes as well as four road corridors via Gondar-Debark, Humera-Shiraro, Kombolcha-Kobo-Alamata, and Aba’la routes.

According to the Commission, a total of 141,671 metric tons of emergency food aid have been delivered to conflict-affected communities in Amhara, Afar, and Tigray regions in the first round until this week, benefiting 8.3 million people.

More Food Aid en route

“The food aid delivery is now being accelerated,” Shiferaw said, stating the beginning of another round of emergency food distribution to the three regions.

Currently, Shiferaw said the Commission is transporting 25,000mt of food to the Tigray region, 2000mt to the Amhara region, and over 1000mt food to the Afar region, which amounts to 20% of the total food aid delivery planned to be delivered in the second round.

Apart from food, the finance required for various activities has been transferred in cash through the United Nations.

The cash is sent to the region through Mekelle and Shire cities. The majority of the money, 750 million Birr, was transferred to Mekelle while the remaining 209 was sent through Shire.

“More than 959 million Birr have been delivered to Tigray thus far,” Commissioner Shiferaw said.

The commissioner finally said the government is heavily investing in reconstruction and rehabilitation activities in the war-affected areas of the northern part of the country, particularly in the Tigray region.
