Covid-19: Ethiopia Logs 188 Cases, 2 Fatalities over the Weekend

ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia has logged 188 additional novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) cases and two related fatalities in the last forty-eight hours, data from the ministry of health shows. 

The combined positive infections identified on Saturday and Sunday have brought the confirmed tally to 490,370, according to the latest Covid report issued on Sunday evening.

More than 500 patients have also recovered from the disease in the reported period, pushing the national recovery total to 466,891. There are now 15,925 confirmed active cases in Ethiopia. 

Despite a relative increase in recoveries, the number of severely sick patients with Covid-19 has grown to 50 after six patients were admitted to hospitals on Sunday.

Two patients have also died due to the deadly respiratory disease caused by a coronavirus in the reported period.

Health officials reported one fatality on Saturday and Sunday. The nation’s Covid-related death toll currently stands at 7,552.

Health experts are still advising the public to be vigilant and follow the Covid protocols including wearing facemasks when in crowded places and getting the vaccine shot. 

In the last 48 hours, the nation has offered close to 11,000 doses of the Covid vaccine, the latest update on Sunday shows. At least 7,800 people have also received their second shots.

Health officials started offering the Covid vaccine in Ethiopia in March 2021. Since then, they have managed to administer over 52.2 million vaccine doses. About 42.8 million people have also been fully vaccinated against the Coronavirus.

The Ministry of Health plans to reach 60% Covid-19 vaccination coverage by the end of 2023.
