ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia has recorded 1, 687 more Covid-19 cases and 34 related fatalities on Wednesday, data from the ministry of health shows.
The East African nation tested nearly 9, 500 people to confirm the positive cases in the last twenty-four, says the ministry in its daily Covid-19 report.
The national death toll has also reached 5, 035 after 34 patients succumbed to the disease in the reported period.
After a rise for three consecutive days, the number of severe cases has dropped by five after today.
There are now 778 severely sick patients getting treatment in intensive care units, reveals the report, which puts the active case count at 27, 474.
It also says as many as 1, 463 patients have also recovered from the acute respiratory disease, pushing the recovery toll to 294, 555.
Ethiopia confirmed its first case on March 13, last year. Since then, it has recorded more than 327, 000 infections out of nearly 3.35 million tests conducted.
In recent days, the delta variant is causing the new case tally and Covid-19 related fatalities to increase sharply, according health officials.
They are urging the public to observe the health advice put in place including wearing face masks, social distancing and proper hand washing as well as taking Covid-19 vaccines.
In the past 24-hours, the country administered more than 33, 000 Covid-19 vaccines doses nationwide.
The government started inoculating the public on March 13, 2021. To date, nearly 2.34 million people have been vaccinated against the Coronavirus.
