Covid-19: Ethiopia Registers 159 More Cases, Nine Deaths

ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia has registered 159 new COVID-19 cases and nine-related fatalities on Monday, according to Ministry of Health.

The country confirmed the new infections after testing 4,638 people in the past twenty-four hours, the Ministry’s daily Covid-19 report claims.

Additional 9 coronavirus-related deaths and 324 more recoveries were also reported in the same period, pushing the national death toll to 6, 551 and total recoveries to 343, 431.



There are now 388 severely sick Covid-19 patients in the country, says the report that puts the national confirmed active cases tally at 17, 385.

Ethiopia confirmed its first Covid-19 case in March, 2020. Since then, it has identified a total of 367, 369 cases after conducting close to 3.74 million tests.

Vaccination Drive

Despite the recent reletive drop in new cases, health officials are still advising the public to observe the health protocols put in place such as wearing face masks.

They are also pushing ahead with the national immunization campaign and has so far offered a total of 5, 047, 116 doses of Covid-19 vaccine.

More than 10, 000 of these doses have been administered in the past 24-hours, according to the ministry of health report.



Ethiopia began inoculating its citizens on March 13, 2021. To date, it has fully inoculated more than 3.66 million of people against the virus.

The campaign, which involves Johnson & Johnson, AstaraZeneca, Pfizer and Sinopharm, plans to immunise as many as 22 million people  by the end of January, 2022.
