Covid-19: Ethiopia’s Active Cases Count Exceeds 20,000

ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia has recorded 699 new coronavirus infections over the weekend, which increased the country’s case count to 487,430, reports its ministry of health.

The ministry also reports only 344 patients have recovered from disease in the past 48 hours, taking the recovery tally to 459, 613.

The newly confirmed positive infections have pushed the confirmed active cases total in the country to reach 20, 285. Of these, at least 75 Covid patients have been admitted to hospitals after they become severely sick.

To date, the acute respiratory disease has already caused 7,530 fatalities in Ethiopia, says the ministry, after three patients succumbed to Covid19 on Saturday.

Health officials are still advising the public to be vigilant and follow the Covid protocols including wearing facemasks when in crowded places. They are also urging the public to get the Covid vaccine shot after launching the third round of the vaccination campaign fortnights ago.

The campaign has helped the country to administer more than 51.8 million doses of the Covid vaccine, so far. At least 42.2 million people have also been fully vaccinated against the virus.

Health officials, who offered the first vaccine shot to the public last year in March, plan to achieve 60% COVID-19 vaccination coverage by the end of the 2023 calendar year.
