Customs Officials Seize Gold Bars worth 12.3 Million Birr at Bole Airport

ADDIS ABABA – Customs officers at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport checkpoint seized five gold bars while being transported illegally.

The recovered gold bars are valued at approximately 12.34 million birr, said the Ethiopian Customs Commission on Monday.

The airport customs branch officers intercepted the gold bars during a search conducted based on a tip they received from the national intelligence agency, NISS.



An unknown number of suspects involved in the smuggling activity have been apprehended and are being questioned by the federal police.

The commission said its officers in all customs branch offices are exerting their effort to prevent contraband trade.

The ever-increasing ways observed in the area will, however, requires collaborative work from all concerned agencies, it added.

As of last Saturday, customs officials have managed to seize contraband goods with an estimated total total value of 245 million birr in November.

Apart from gold, Coffee, cosmetics, electronics, weapons, clothes, drugs, and foreign currencies are goods that dominant in the list of contraband items seized, according to weekly reports of the Commission released.
