ADDIS ABABA – Customs police were able to intercept contraband goods and foreign currencies worth more than 84.4 million birr in the past seven days, said the Ethiopian Customs Commission
In a statement today, the Commission said the majority of them were seized while being smuggled into the country. Its officials estimated their value at 78.4 million birr.
The remaining nearly 5.9 million birr worth of items were intercepted while they were about to leave the country.
Electronics, Cosmetics, Medicine, narcotic drugs, weapons, coffee, khat, clothes, and currencies of various foreign countries have dominated the list of contraband items seized in the week.
According to the Commission, its branches at Moyale and Dire Dawa managed to capture most of the most in the past week after intercepting contraband items valued at 18.99 million birr and 18.98 million birr, respectively.
About 17.9 million birr worth of goods were also seized at Jigjiga customs branch in the same period.
