Customs Seize Contraband valued at 170mln Birr, Arrests 31

ADDIS ABABA – Customs police seized contraband items worth over 170 million Birr in a week-long joint operation against illegal cross border trade.

Ethiopian Customs Commission (ECC) said 31 smugglers and 18 vehicles convoying contrabands have also been captured in the operation beginning Nov 9, 2022.



The list of goods seized include Petrol, Livestock, Coffee, medicines, cosmetics, Khat, vehicles, Khat, weapons, and currencies of various foreign countries.

Much of the contraband seized in the operation involving federal and regional police, were being smuggled into the country.

The commission put their total value at 137.2 million Birr.

Customs police also prevented several items worth 33.7 million birr from leaving the country illegally.

Among ECC’s customs branches, thr Moyale office intercepted the most, capturing 36.8 million birr worth of contrabands.

Dire Dawa and Combolch checkpoints also managed to seize illegal goods worth 24.5 million Birr and 15.5 million Birr, respectively.
