Deputy PM Confers with Israeli Delegation of MPs, Doctors

ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Demeke Mekonnen conferred with the visiting Israeli delegation involving doctors and Members of Parliament today.

The delegation, which includes three members of Israel’s parliament, came to Ethiopia on Monday.

The delegation, since their arrival, has visited Gondar aiming to assist in the reconstruction of damaged health facilities due to the conflict in northern Ethiopia. They also met with members of the Ethiopian parliament.

Deputy PM and FM Demeke received the delegation in his office in the capital on Thursday, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement.

During the meeting, the Ministry said Demeke expressed his appreciation to members of the delegation for taking such a constructive initiative at this critical time.

This timely initiative demonstrated the friendly relations between Ethiopia and Israel and would help cement the longstanding ties between the two countries, he said.

The Deputy PM and members of the delegation stressed that the initiative should transcend the short-term objectives of reconstructing damaged health institutions, MoFA’s statement said.

“As part of the long-term objective, the Israeli delegation expressed a keen interest to work closely with the Black Lion Hospital and other health institutions in Ethiopia,” it added.

The Israeli delegation, who came to Ethiopia under the auspices of the Society for International Development Israel (SID Israel) was led by Likud MK Gadi Yevarkan together with Labor MK Emilie Moati and MK Vladimir Beliak from Yesh Atid.

The SID Israel is an umbrella organization that brings together over 170 Israeli private companies, government agencies, civil society organizations, academic programs, and institutions.
