ERA Launches Construction of Jimma-Chida Road Project

ADDIS ABEBA – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has presided over the launch of construction of the Jimma-Chida asphalt concrete road project in South West Ethiopia, according to Ethiopian Roads Authority.

The 80 kilometers-long road will link Oromia and SNNP regionals states when its construction is complete within four years, the authority said.

The authority said Chinese firm, China Tiesju Civil Engineering Group Co, Ltd, has already been awarded the to carry out the construction project.

The road will be built at a cost of 2.4 billion birr to be covered by the African Development Bank (AfDB), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the government of Ethiopia.

Once completed, the project would also help to exploit the untapped natural resources in the region by connecting Addis Ababa-Jimma-Bonga-Mizan road with Hossaena-Sodo-Arbaminch road.

Prime Minister Abiy and his cabinet as well as Japanese ambassador to Ethiopia have attended the ground-breaking ceremony held in Chida town of Konta special woredas on Tuesday morning.

“This road will support development efforts initiated through ‘Dine for Ethiopia’,” Abiy said.

The area that the road covers is known for growing coffee and fruit. The construction of the road would help framers to supply easily their products to local and global markets, the authority said.

It will also allow tourists to travel to Chebera Churchura national park and contribute a lot for the construction of Koysha hydroelectric power, according to ERA.
