Guinea dealt a huge blow to Ethiopia’s chances of qualifying for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations by beating them 3-2 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, Morocco.
during their post-match pressers, Guinea head coach Kaba Diawar said he was delighted with his high-scoring side while his Ethiopian counterpart bemoaned Wubetu Abate and called the result unfortunate.
“The game was good and we tried to score as many goals as possible. We were stronger and quicker,” Guinea’s coach said “I am glad that we tried to do that and scored three goals”.
The victory saw the Guineans move to nine points in Group D with three wins from four matches, three ahead of second-placed Egypt who play Malawi later on Tuesday.
Ethiopia remain rooted to the bottom of the group standing with just three points as their hope of qualification has grown slimmer.
“We missed some quality players because of injuries. From the two games, we played a bit better today and it was unfortunate we lost,” said Ethiopia’s coach Wubetu Abate.
“We will try to see what we can achieve in the last two games,” Wubetu added.
The Guineans scored the first goal just five minutes into the match.
Skipper Naby Keita’s goal just five minutes into the match gave guinea the lead. Canaan Markneh scored an equalizer for Ethiopia from inside the box after some delightful build-up play.
But two goals from Ilaix Moriba and Morgan Guilavogui gave Guinea a commanding lead over Ethiopia. Kitika Jemma netted one back for Ethiopia in the final minute of the stoppage time.
