Ethiopia Gets 271, 200 Covid-19 Vaccine Doses from Germany

ADDIS ABABA – The government of Germany has today donated 271 200 doses of Astrazeneca vaccine to Ethiopia.

After receiving the vaccines from German Chargé d’Affaires, Heiko Nitzschke, Health Minister Dr. Lia Tadesse said she was “very grateful for the German Government donation via COVAX”.

“These vaccines come at a critical time when we are experiencing a surge in COVID-19 cases. Ethiopia is committed to stop the spread of COVID-19 alongside the rest of the world,” she added.

To date, Ethiopia has conducted close to 3.36 million tests to confirm a total of 328, 735 cases, putting Ethiopia among the hardest hit African countries.

“We can only beat the coronavirus together – worldwide,” said Nitzschke. “This is why we support Ethiopia with today’s vaccine donation”.

Germany is the second largest donor to the ACT Accelerator and has so far provided 2.2 billion euro to the ACT Accelerator, according to the Chargé d’Affaires.

The vaccines were donated through the COVAX Facility in continued efforts to protect Ethiopia’s population from COVID-19.

Ethiopia began inoculating its nationals on March 13 – a week after they received 2.2 million AstraZeneca vaccines from the COVAX Facility. As of Thursday evening, close to 2.4 million Ethiopians received the vaccine.
