ADDIS ABABA – The government of Ethiopia on Monday signed a 32 million Euro Financial support agreement with the European Union (EU) and France Development Agency.
The fund will finance the food security and agriculture rehabilitation project to be carried out in conflict-affected regions of the East African nation, the Ministry of Finance said.
France contributed 18 million Euro of the total financial support while the EU made 14 million Euro support for the project.
The Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Transformation (ATI) will implement the project in the areas affected by the conflict in Tigray, Amhara, and Afar regions.
The institution will provide farmers with the necessary resources to restart production and rehabilitate the service infrastructure in order to avoid a crisis, the Finance Ministry added.
The project has two components – addressing the most urgent needs by reviving agricultural production in these areas, and strengthening food self-sufficiency.
In the first phase, at least 533,000 households will benefit from the project.
The households will receive improved seeds of cereals, legumes and vegetables will be provided along with improved breeds of poultry, selected small ruminants, horticultural seeds and irrigation pumps.
The three-side agreement was signed on Monday by state minister of finance Semereta Sewasew, AFD country director Valérie Tehio, and Head of Cooperation at the EU Delegation to Ethiopia Stefan Lock.
