Ethiopia Grants Coal Production Licenses for Eight Mining Firms

ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia’s Ministry of Mines has issued coal production licenses for eight local mining companies with a combined registered capital of 6 billion Birr..

The licenses were issued two weeks after the Council of Ministers vatted the draft agreements and allowed the Ministry to sign them with companies.



The agreements signed between Minister of Mines Takele Uma and officials of the mining firms, allows the companies to produce and develop coal mining in Ethiopia.

Accordingly, ET Mines Development S.C. and EAst Africa Holding secured licences to produce coal reserves in the South Western Ethiopian Peoples Regional state.

Three firms, Oromia Mining SC, National Mining Corporation, and Realmine Trading PLC, will engage in coal production in Oromia.



Shakana Boys PLC and L-Net Technology Group have been granted to licences to produce coal in Benishangul-Gumuz while Sun Mining & Trading Plc will develop a coal reserve site in SNNP regional state.

The mining companies are expected to assuage the national coal demand. Ethiopia currently spends up to 200 million dollars annually importing coal for use in cement production and energy generation.
