Ethiopia, Kenya to Host Chinese-sponsored Peace Meet for Horn of Africa

ADDIS ABABA – China will hold the first peace conference for the Horn of Africa in the first half of this year as its newly appointed special envoy, Xue Bing, continued his visit to East Africa in Kenya.

Ambassador Bing, who was appointed as China’s first special envoy to the Horn of Africa in mid February, started his visit to the region in Eritrea and has so far visited Ethiopia, Djibouti, Somalia and Kenya.

Speaking at a press briefing in Nairobi on Saturday, Ambassador Xue said the meeting will offer a platform for the countries in the region to settle their differences through negotiations.

He also said Kenya and Ethiopia have offered to host the peace conference for the Horn of Africa region which is a home to countries that have traditional relations with China.

“We are strategic partners. This area is strategically located and abundant in resources. The potential of development is huge,” Being was quoted as saying by Kenya’s Newspaper the Star.

“At the same time, there are issues of peace and security like differences over boundaries, ethnic and religious conflicts,” he continued, “So, peace and security is important and that is why China put forward the dialogue of peace and development to provide a platform for countries to come together to settle their differences through consultations and negotiations.”

The regional countries are all positive and have welcomed the Chinese proposal, the envoy added.

After Kenya, the special envoy is expected to continue his visit to other East African nations – Uganda and South Sudan.

During his visit to Addis Ababa, the Special Envoy met with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Demeke Mekonnen and discussed various regional and bilateral issues.

He also told Demeke China’s strong desire to support countries in the Horn of Africa to address the challenges of security, development, and governance and pursue a path of unity and self-improvement.
