ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia, a host nation of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) 2022, has assured the international community of its readiness to make the annual event, a platform that facilitates the discussion of public policy issues pertaining to the internet, a success.

The 17th IGF will be held in Addis Ababa from Nov 28 to Dec 2, this year, in hybrid format under an overarching theme ‘Resilient Internet for a Shared Sustainable and Common Future’.

Preparations for IGF 2022 are ongoing. The Second IGF 2022 Open Consultations and MAG Meeting was hosted at the United Nations Office in Geneva from 6 to 8 July 2022.

Addressing the meeting, Ethiopia’s State Minister of Innovation and Technology, Huria Ali, assured the international community of her country`s readiness and commitment to host the event.

Huria also briefed the participants about the preparations undertaken so far by the government.

The preparation is led by a national IGF coordinating committee led by the Minister of Innovation and Technology, and a Steering Committee led by the State Minister.

A website dedicated to the forum has been developed and other stakeholders including Ethiopian airlines, Foreign Affairs Ministry and Education Ministry are also engaged in the preparation, the state minister said. Regarding outreach efforts, invitations have already been sent to the Member states, observers, and all participants, she added.

The state minister underscored the importance of organizing such a series of consultations and meetings until the end of the forum to make IGF “more impactful and successful” and reassured Ethiopia’s continued support of these meetings.

apart from the primary in-person meeting, the IGF venue in Addis Ababa will have its digital 3D equivalent, providing online participants the opportunity to enter meeting rooms virtually and connect to the participating platform.

Zenebe Kebede, Permanent Representative to the UN Office at Geneva, appreciated the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs and the IGF Secretariat, who selected Addis Ababa to host the 17th IGF 2022 forum.

The Ambassador also briefed the meeting about the safety rules, and Ethiopia’s experiences in hosting successful forums and conferences successfully this year so far, including the 2022 Africa Union Heads of State and Government Summit in March.

The participants, on their part, appreciated the preparatory work and progress made by the Government of Ethiopia and the vibrant working relationship with the Ministry and all actors involved.

They also expressed their excitement to see the forum again in Africa after 13 years as the fourth annual IGF Meeting was held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, in 2009.

The Forum has been serving as a global multi-stakeholder platform that facilitates a common understanding of how to maximize Internet opportunities and address risks and challenges since the inaugural meeting that took place in Athens, Greece in 2006.
