Ethiopia Records 16 Covid-19 Fatalities

ADDIS ABABA – Sixteen Ethiopians have passed away due to health complications linked to the novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) on Monday, the ministry of health says.

This is the second-highest death toll in a day this month after 21 deaths reported on Friday, August 21. The national death toll has now gone up to 4,660.



In its daily report, the ministry also confirms 693 new Covid-19 cases after testing 5,345 in the past twenty-four hours.

Severe, Active cases Decline

Its report also shows the severe case count has declined by 2 as compared to the previous day, stopping a weeks-long rising trend.

There are now 600 severely ill patients who are receiving treatments in hospitals.

The patients are among the 26, 070 active cases.

Ethiopia has also recorded more recoveries than new cases for two consecutive days, reducing the confirmed Covid-19 active case number down to 26, 070.

As many as 1,501 patients have recuperated in the last 24-hours, the ministry’s report reveals.

Vaccination

The East African nation has so far conducted over 3.23 million tests to confirm a total of 3,06,810 infections. More than 276, 000 of these infected have already recuperated.

As part of its effort to tackle the pandemic, the country is carrying out a national immunization campaign.

More than 16, 000 people have been inoculated against the Covid-19 in the reported period, says the ministry.

The government of Ethiopia began offering vaccines to its citizens on March 13, 2021 – a week after they received 2.2 million AstraZeneca vaccines from the COVAX Facility.

To date, over 2.45 million vaccines have been administered to the public.
