ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia has registered 265 new COVID-19 cases and 8 related fatalities on Tuesday, data from the Ministry of Health shows.
The country confirmed the new positive infections after testing 6, 594 people in the past twenty-four hours, the Ministry’s report claims.
Additional 8 Coronavirus-related deaths and 190 recoveries have also been recorded in the same period, pushing the national death toll to 6, 638 and total recoveries to 346,159.
Currently, there are 280 severely sick Covid-19 patients nationwide, claims the report that puts the confirmed active cases tally at 16, 511.
Ethiopia confirmed its first Covid-19 case in March, 2020. Since then, it has identified a total of 369, 244 cases after conducting close to 3.79 million tests.
– Vaccination Drive –
Despite the recent relative drop in new and severe cases, the Ministry of health is still advising the public to observe the health protocols put in place such as wearing face masks.
It also intensified immunization drive with the launch of a new two-week campaign targeting dwellers of 65 cities and towns.
In the last twenty-four, the country administered more than 18, 400
doses of vaccine, taking the total number of doses given to the public to nearly 5.1 million. .
The East African nation began inoculating its citizens on March 13, 2021. To date, nearly 3.7 million people have been fully vaccinated against the virus.
The campaign, which involves Johnson & Johnson, AstaraZeneca, Pfizer and Sinopharm, plans to immunize as many as 22 million people by the end of January.
