Ethiopia Reports 279 New Coronavirus Cases

ADDIS ABABA — Ethiopia registered 279 more novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) infections on Saturday, taking the national tally to more than 367, 000, the health ministry said.

Additional 15 coronavirus-related deaths and 269 recoveries were reported on the same day, bringing the national death toll to 6, 531 and recoveries tally to 342, 831, the ministry said in its daily report.

The country now has 17, 698 active cases, of whom 394 are severely ill, the report says.

Ethiopia, Africa’s second-most populous nation, has so far reported the highest COVID-19 caseload in the East Africa region.

The nation recorded its first Covid-19 case in March, 2020. Since then, it has confirmed a total of 367, 062 cases after testing nearly 3.74 million people.

Vaccination Drive

Health officials are urging the public to observe the health protocols put in place to tackle the pandemic including wearing face masks while pushing ahead with a national vaccination campaign.

A total of 5, 024, 926 doses of Covid-19 vaccine have so far been offered to the public in the county.

Nearl 6, 000 were administered on Saturday, according to the ministry of health’s report.
Ethiopia launched the vaccination drive on March 13, 2021 – a week after its health.

Ministry obtained 2.2mln AstraZeneca vaccines from the Covax Facility. To date, the country have fully immunised more than 3.65 million of its citizens against the virus.
