ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia has registered its first Covid-19 disease related fatality in nine days, a ministry of health report says.

In its update, the ministry has confirmed the death of a patient due to the acute respiratory disease on Wednesday.

This is the first Covid-induced fatality that the nation recorded since May 16, 2022 as the death toll reaches 7, 513.

Health officials have also reported 151 new infections after testing 5,545 people for coronavirus in the last twenty-four hours.

The figure, the highest daily total recorded since February 18, has pushed the confirmed total to 471, 678, as per today’s update.

At least 455, 832 of the patients have already recuperated from the disease, says the ministry after adding only 13 new recoveries on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, two more Covid patients have been admitted to hospital after they became seriously ill in the reported period.

The severe cases number has now reached 12, says the report. These patients are among 8, 331 confirmed active cases in the country.

Vaccine Drive Stalls

The vaccination pace is still at a standstill as health officials stick with their plan to launch the third round vaccine drive in the first week of June.

The Ministry of Health offered the first Covid vaccine to the public in March, 2021. Since then, it has administered nearly 29.45 doses of the vaccine while fully vaccinating 24.5 million people against the Coronavirus.
