Ethiopia to Focus on Bolstering Diplomatic Ties with African Nations

ADDIS ABABA – Foreign Ministry said the government will strengthen diplomatic effort within Africa to avert foreign meddling in its internal affairs of Ethiopia.

In his weekly press briefing today, spokesperson of Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dina Mufti said efforts will be made to gather even more support in Africa in the spirit of pan-Africanism in a bid to fend off foreign meddling.

Redoubling Efforts

In the ending year, Ambassador Dina said Ethiopia was able to withstand the UN Security Council pressure on it due to the Ministry’s “hard work and the efforts of Ethiopia’s friends”.

He also said the Pan-Africanism movement, “which started in support of Ethiopia in particular, is very promising and intensifying”.

“There has been successful performance in motivating pan-Africanism so that Ethiopia will be supported by African colleagues to repulse undue pressure on the country,” Dina said.

This effort, however, should be redoubled to garner even more continent wide support that enables Ethiopia to ward off foreign meddling, the spokesperson added.

Revamping diplomatic relations with allies of Ethiopia will be conducted in the spirit of mutual benefit, Dina told reporters.

Focus on internal Unity

In the new year, he said the ministry’s focus will be to gear towards maintaining the country’s sovereignty.

“Our main strength is out” unity internally, said Dina, adding that lawmakers’ decision to approve the National Dialogue Commission Establishment Proclamation on Wednesday will, in this regard, be hopeful.

The commission will be tasked to facilitate consultations among various segments of the society in identifying the root causes of the differences and come up with solutions in a sustainable manner.

Ethiopia-US Ties

Ambassador Dina said the government of Ethiopia will exert its efforts to clear misunderstandings regarding the reality on the ground.

“I hope the new administration will try to mend the ties,” Dina stated.

A high level US delegation has recently been touring Kenya, Egypt, Turkey, and UAE to discuss Ethiopia.

“We are not closed for discussion. It is (therefore) better to discuss our issues with us than with our neighbors and allies far and near,” Dina said.
