Reports state that Ethiopian Airlines has asked the Nigerian government for a refund.
The money was reportedly requested to be returned because there was a shortage of foreign currency in the nation, though the exact amount was not made public.
While in Addis Abeba for the 36th African Summit, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari spoke with the CEO of Ethiopian Airlines.
The board chairman, Girma Wake, has requested the president to return the money, which, according to The Nation, was taken by the Nigerian government due to a shortage of foreign currency.
The board chairman also requested that the Nigerian government address the legal issues preventing Ethiopian Airlines from acquiring 49 percent of Nigerian Airlines.
On his part, Muhammad Buhari said that his government had a very difficult time deciding to allow Ethiopian Airlines to operate in Nigeria. They expressed hope for future improvements in the situation.
Ethiopian Airlines has demonstrated that it is prepared to launch service in Nigeria as soon as all legal matters are settled.
Ethiopian Airlines also intends to improve its market connections in Nigeria by increasing the number of flights from Lagos and Abuja to Addis Ababa.
