Ethiopian, Indian Ministers Discuss Bilateral, Regional Issues

ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia’s Women and Social Affairs Minister, Ergogie Tesfaye, held a discussion with Indian Foreign Minister Jaishankara Subrahmanyam about bilateral, regional, and multilateral issues of interest.

The two ministers held the discussion today in New Delhi where Erogogie is currently on a visit.



On the occasion, the Foreign Affairs Ministry of Ethiopia said in a statement that Erogogie reiterated the long-standing relations between the two countries, and briefed the Indian Minister about the current situation in Ethiopia including the peace-building initiatives that the government has been undertaking thus far.

The minister also commended India for its principled and constructive position at the UN Security Council, particularly on issues concerning Ethiopia.

Ergogie also addressed issues regarding the trilateral negotiation over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), stressing Ethiopia’s unwavering commitment to resume the African Union-led process.

Indian Foreign Minister Jaishankar, on his part, appreciated the ever-growing multifaceted relations of the two countries in the areas of trade and investment, education, and capacity building.

India is keen to engage with Ethiopia based on mutual interests and to expand areas of engagement including cooperation in the global arena, Foreign Minister added.

Ergogie Recieves ICCR award

Minister Ergogie is an Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) Alumni.



In New Delhi, the council has recognized the minister with an award for her outstanding contribution in enhancing bilateral ties between the two countries.

“Congratulate her on receiving the ICCR’s Distinguished Alumni Award,” tweeted Indian Foreign Minister Jaishankar.

”She personifies the strengthening India-Ethiopia relationship,” he added.

Ergogie, one of the five Distinguished Alumni Awardees, completed her Ph.D. in Anthropology from Andhra University during 2013-2016 under ICCR Scholarship Program.
