Ethiopia’s 11th Regional State to Go Official Tomorrow

ADDIS ABABA – South West Ethiopia People Regional state to go official on Tuesday as Ethiopia’s eleventh regional state.

Residents of one special world and five zones voted in favor of breaking away from Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ (SNNP) Regional state in a referendum vote held on Sep. 30.

Thirty days after the vote the results received the approval of the upper house of Ethiopian parliament paving a way for formation of South West Ethiopia Regional state as the eleventh state of the East African nation.



The council of the new state has scheduled to hold its first session in Bonga town on Tuesday during which its members are expected to appoint chief regional administrator, house speaker and deputy speaker.

Introduction of the regional flag and endorsement of regional constitution as well as various regulations will also be approved during the council meeting, according to the state news agency.

The Kaffa, Sheka, Bench Sheko, Dawuro, West Omo zones and Konta special woreda is part of the the South-West Ethiopian people regional state.
