ADDIS ABABA – The former Prime Minister of Niger, Dr. Ibrahim Assane Mayaki has been appointed as the African Union Special Envoy for Food Systems.
The AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat announced the appointment of Myaki as special envoy on Saturday.
AU says the appointment is pursuant to its objective to address prevailing international dynamics and the effects of climate change-induced food insecurity by leveraging the African Common positions to mitigate the multi-dimensional consequences of food insecurity.
The move, it says, would also support Member States’ efforts with high-level advocacy and coordination in these priority areas to harness the potential of Continental food systems for the benefit of Africans.
Mahamat described the new special envoy as “a respected African statesman,” adding that he was “confident that Dr. Mayaki will contribute to the success of this new multidimensional Continental Role.”
The Nigerian previously served as Chief executive officer of the African Union Development Agency or AUDA-NEPAD.
He is now expected to bring decades of political and institutional leadership at the highest level in leading the multi-faceted development Agenda of the Continent.
In his new role, Dr. Mayaki will work in close collaboration with the AU Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to lead and advise multi-stakeholder technical consultations.
Along with the department, he will lead the launch of a Continental action plan for rolling out and integrating the Africa Common Position on Food Systems into new national agriculture investment and development plans.
