The Ethiopian Citizens for Social Justice Party (EZEMA) has requested that the government compensate citizens who were killed or injured as a result of the recent action by the security forces of the southern region and zone against the residents of Wolkite city in Gurage zone due to a lack of water.
On February 8, 2015, Izema published a press release. “What happened to the inhabitants who came out in a peaceful demonstration due to a lack of water in Wolkite is a demonstration of the failure of the government’s leadership and a manifestation of tyranny,” it charged.
According to the statement, despite objections from inhabitants of Wolkite city in Gurage zone, water services from Worjebar, Qatesa, and Rebo have been disrupted for a long time, and compensation should be granted for the damage caused by the government security forces’ actions.
The party also requested that the security forces accused of destroying civilians’ life be prosecuted and that a temporary and permanent solution to the community’s water supply problem be provided.
