ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopian Federal Police on Sunday announced the seizure of 481,550 US dollars and 33, 000 Euro currencies during a smuggling attempt.
The Police estimate the value of the foreign currencies to be more than 26.53 million birr.
Director-General of the Eastern Zone Criminal investigation unit, Inspector Lemessa Mekonen said a joint operation led to the seizure of the banknotes which were being transported to Djibouti.
Inspector Lemessa said the operation was conducted jointly with the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) following a tip-off from the public.
The currencies were found hidden in the front seat of the truck, which started its journey from Addis Ababa.
Police described the vehicle as a Scania Truck, with license plate Code-3 62110ET, and said it was intercepted when it reached around Genet Menafesha area of Dire Dawa city administration.
The truck driver has been arrested. Investigation into the case has continued, said the Police.
The number of attempts to smuggle foreign currencies out of the country is increasing recently, and the joint security taskforce is working to put this trend to an end, said Inspector Lemessa.
