ADDIS ABABA – France donated over 1, 008, 000 doses of Johnson and Johnson covid-19 vaccines to Ethiopia through COVAX mechanism, its Embassy in Addis Ababa said.
The embassy said the latest donation is part of France’s global commitment to combat Covid-19, an acute respiratory disease caused by Coronavirus.
The donation comes in addition to the 843,600 AstraZeneca vaccine doses already donated by France in July and October.
The vaccines arrived Addis Ababa on Friday a day after Minister of Health, Dr. Lia Tadesse held a meeting with French Ambassador Rémi Maréchaux.
“The fruitful discussion,” Dr Lia said, was focused “on the holistic support that the “France is providing in fighting the COVID19 pandemic and beyond, particularly through the Global Fund”.
“I also expressed our sincere appreciation for their recent donation of 1,000,800 doses of Johnson and Johnson COVID19 vaccine in addition to the previous vaccine donations,” she said after the meet.
France was the first country to share covid-19 doses through Covax last April, according to reports. Since then, Paris committed to donate 120 million vaccines doses by mid-2022, among which 75.6 million doses have already been donated.
