ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia’s Gotytom Gebreslase run a championship record to win the women’s world marathon title at the World Athletics Championships on Monday.
Gotytom had to break clear of longtime leader Judith Korir of Kenya in the final two kilometers to win the marathon title not only Championship record but also her personal best of 2:18:11 –
Korir, making her championship debut, won a Silver medal for Kenya, clocking 2:18:20, her personal best.
Israel’s 33-year-old Lonah Salpeter claimed bronze finishing on 2:20:18 ahead of Eritrea’s Nazret Weldu who set a national record of 2:20:29. US runner Sara Hall is home, all smiles, in fifth place in 2:22:10.
Gotytom’s win has completed the Ethiopian marathon double in two Championship records at Oregon following Tamirat Tola comfortably winning the men’s marathon title on Sunday.
