High School Exit Exam Dates Announced

ADDIS ABABA – Authorities have announced the schedule for this year’s Ethiopian secondary school leaving certificate examination (ESSLCE).

in a statement today, the Educational Assessment and Exam Service (EAES) says the grade 12 exam in the 2016 Ethiopian calendar will take place in the first half of July.

The announcement comes days after the Ministry of Education said the exam will partly be conducted online stating preparations are underway to do so in “some selected cities” of each region.

Many, however, will have to travel to public universities where the paper-based exam will be administered under strict supervision, in two rounds.

The first round will see the social science exams administered from July 10 to 14, per the new schedule. The students taking the exam on paper, therefore, have to arrive at the university campuses they are assigned to on July 7 and 8, EAES says.

In the second round, students in the natural science stream will take the exam for three consecutive days starting from Monday, July 16. Those traveling to universities hosting the exam have to arrive there on July 13 and 14, the EAES says.

Hundreds of thousands of students take the exam annually after completing twelve years of schooling. The results are used to determine entrance points for university admission.

Last year, close to 850, 000 students from 1,328 high schools took the national exam and only 3.2% of them scored the passing mark, prompting authorities to extend their remedy program for the second time in two years.

The program aims to give students with relatively good points a second chance at university admission by improving their scores.
